7 Splatter the Pathway

Create a very thin dark-value mixture of Burnt Umber and water. Load a medium or firm toothbrush and splatter it onto the pathway. Then mix white with a touch of Cadmium Orange or Cadmium Yellow Light for a lighter value and splatter it onto the pathway. This will create a nice pebble effect. You can also use other colors like red, blue, orange, green, etc.

8 Build Up the Foreground Grasses

Mix Hooker’s Green with a touch of Burnt Sienna or Cadmium Orange and use a no. 6 bristle flat to scrub in a variety of vertical brushstrokes that suggest tall grasses and brush. You can add Cadmium Yellow Light or Vivid Lime Green for lighter, more spring-like areas. Use Dioxazine Purple or Burnt Umber for the darker shadow areas.

The key is to create a good variety of contrasting values as well as tonal values. Keep in mind that these meadows are closer in the foreground, so your brushstrokes can be taller, looser and more textured here.
